History of MUA

By focusing on key fundamentals--excellent faculty, small class sizes, a modern campus, a wide range of clinical affiliations and a cost-effective tution--Medical University of the Americas has enjoyed more than a decade of rapid growth and achievement.

Founders

MUA was founded in 1998 by a group of educators who were active in international medical education and were able to use their extensive experience and knowledge in the founding of MUA. Since the seating of the first class, approximately 625 physicians have earned their M.D. at MUA.

Shortage of Physicians

A major impetus behind the founding of MUA was a concern over the severe shortage of physicians--a concern that remains today. A recent study by the American Medical Association predicts a shortfall in excess of 200,000 physicians in the United States by the year 2020. Canada also predicts a shortage of physicians, especially in primary care.

Accreditations, Licensure and Approvals

MUA voluntarily invites leading medical authorities to evaluate its program:

  • Medical University of the Americas’ Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) Program is listed in both the World Health Organization (WHO) directory and the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) of the Foundation for the Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER).
  • MUA students are eligible to sit for United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) exams. MUA graduates who successfully pass USMLE Step 1, Step 2CK and Step 2CS are eligible for Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®) certification which is required to enter a residency in the United States.Upon completion of residency, MUA graduates are then eligible to take the USMLE Step 3 exam.
  • Medical University of the Americas is accredited by the Department of Education of St. Christopher-Nevis and graduates are eligible for licensure within the federation.
  • Medical University of the Americas is one of a select group of international medical schools approved by the New York State Education Department to allow students to complete more than 12 weeks of clinical clerkships in New York State.

Reputation in Canada

In Canada, where access to medical school is even more competitive than in the U.S., MUA has earned a very strong reputation. A significant number of our graduates have completed their residencies in Canadian training programs.
