United States Medical Licensure Examination (USMLE)
Students who wish to practice medicine in the United States are required to successfully pass the USMLE. There are three examinations required prior to licensure USMLE Step I, USMLE Step II, and Clinical Skills Assessment.
Test Description
USMLE Step I* A comprehensive examination covering the student's knowledge of the basic medical sciences.
USMLE Step II* Tests the students on their knowledge of clinical medicine and is typically taken after the student has completed their "core" clinical rotations.
Clinical Skills Assessment* Tests the students ability to satisfactorily perform a history and physical examination.
USMLE Step III Assesses whether you can apply medical knowledge and understanding of biomedical and clinical science essential for the unsupervised practice of medicine, with emphasis on patient management in ambulatory settings.
TOFEL English Measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to communicate orally in English.
*Required prior to licensure.
Information regarding the USMLE examinations may be obtained from their website at http://www.ecfmg.org/usmle/index.html.

The Medical University provides a USMLE board review course in the final semester of the Basic Science program. It is to the student's advantage to take the USMLE step I, as soon as possible after completing the basic sciences. Typically, students will register for the USMLE step I immediately after the basic science program or following a brief review period of no more than 30-45 days. Students may be endorsed a maximum of three times for Step I and Step II. Further endorsement requires a written appeal to the Executive Committee. Students from other countries, who do not intend to do clinical rotations or practice medicine in the United States, are not required to take the USMLE.

White Coat Ceremony
Students fulfilling the Basic Science portion of the M.D. program will be awarded a certificate of completion at the White Coat ceremony held on Nevis during the last week of the fifth semester. All students who have met the Basic Science requirements are required to attend the ceremony. Bachelor of Health Science degrees will be conferred to those students who have applied and fulfilled the requirements. Academic awards will also be presented at that time.
Doctor of Medicine Commencement
The Commencement exercise for conferring of the Doctor of Medicine Degree is held annually in the United States. Students who have completed the graduation requirements in the preceding September, January, and May semesters are expected to attend the formal graduation ceremony. To be eligible to receive the Doctor of Medicine degree students must satisfy requirements of the Basic Science curriculum and Clinical Medicine program. In addition, all outstanding balances must be paid in full by the commencement date.
