Professor of Microbiology & Immunology, Course Director (IDR) | (Chair, Molecular Sciences)
Dr Neeraj Kumar is a Professor and Course Director of the Infection, Defense and Response (Microbiology & Immunology) course and Chair of the Molecular Sciences Department at Medical University of the Americas. He is a medical educator with extensive teaching experience internationally in medical microbiology and immunology.
Dr Kumar earned his PhD in microbiology from the NDRI, Karnal, India, where he worked on biochemical and molecular characterization and the optimization of the production of bacteriocin from Lactobacillus acidophilus and its antibacterial spectrum in inhibiting the pathogenic and spoilage organisms. He started his teaching career in 2001 as an assistant professor in the microbiology department and was later promoted to associate professor. He was also working as a consultant in a clinical microbiology lab at Universal College of Medical & Dental Sciences (UCMS&DS), Nepal.
Dr Kumar has also taught microbiology courses to graduate and postgraduate students in the Faculty of Medicine, 7th April University and at Al-Arab Medical University, Libya. He was also assigned the responsibility of being the microbiology course coordinator in the Public Health Science program at Al-Arab Medical University (2008-2011).
Dr Kumar also worked as an associate professor at Lovely Professional University, India. Dr Kumar joined Medical University of the Americas as associate professor in January 2013 and was made course director in 2014. He was promoted to professor in June 2017 and was made chair of the Molecular Sciences department in 2018.
He has a passion for teaching and enjoys teaching microbiology and immunology to students. He is adept at developing proactive strategies for active learning and for exam development. He also has expertise in student engagement.
Dr Kumar has actively contributed to the development of a competency-based curriculum for the Infection, Defense and Response course. He also serves as a member of RLRA Review Committee and the Drug Testing Committee. He is also a faculty advisor for student associations such as AMSA.
Dr Kumar has delivered many oral, as well as poster, presentations at numerous medical conferences including International Conference on Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Disease Processes, University of Kashmir, India; International Conference on DNA Structure in Health & Disease, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), India; Annual Conferences organized by Clinical Infectious Disease Society (CIDS) and 3rd Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan (2012).
Dr Kumar has done many online courses in microbiology from various prestigious universities including Stanford University and Johns Hopkins University. Recently, he earned the ‘Certificates of Achievement’ in immunology and genetics courses from Harvard Medical School Office of Online Learning.
