MUA – Home to International Medical Students

The Medical University of the Americas has a vibrant and inclusive learning environment that warmly welcomes students from diverse communities around the world. We believe that regardless of your nationality or background, you deserve the opportunity to pursue your dream of becoming a physician. To support our students, we offer a range of pathways specifically designed for international students who aspire to build a successful career in the field of medicine.

6-year BSc/MD Program

For students who have secondary school credentials, we offer the 6-year BSc/MD program. This accelerated medical education program follows a 2+4 model and includes a 6-semester (2-year) pre-medical curriculum, which can be completed on-campus or online, with asynchronous options available to accommodate students from various time zones. The pre-medical curriculum is then followed by the 4-year MD program (described below).

5-year BSc/MD Program

For students who have an associates degree, international baccalaureate diploma, A-levels, or other similar credentials, an available pathway is our 5-year program, an accelerated medical education program that consists of a 1+4 model. In this program, students complete a 3-semester (1-year) pre-medical curriculum either on-campus or online. The online option is designed to accommodate students from different time zones, allowing them to participate asynchronously. The pre-medical curriculum is then followed by the 4-year MD program (described below).

4-year MD Program

Through our Basic Sciences program, students embark on their educational journey by studying fundamental sciences for twenty months at our campus located on the beautiful island of Nevis in the Caribbean. After this foundational period, students transition into clinical training, which takes place at renowned hospitals and clinics in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom.

Why International Students Choose MUA

Residency Placements

At MUA, our students not only receive top-notch training but also secure highly competitive residencies that set them up for success in the medical field. We take pride in our four years of outstanding achievements, with an impressive average residency attainment rate of 98%* from 2020 to 2024.

*98% Four Year Residency Placement Rate is the percent of students attaining a residency position out of all graduates or expected graduates in 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 who were active applicants in the NRMP match or attained a residency outside the NRMP match.

Class Size and Learning Environment

MUA firmly believes that small class sizes are crucial to the success of our students. In our Gateway program, we maintain a student-to-faculty ratio of 3:1, while in the Basic Science program, we have a ratio of 7:1. These ratios ensure that our students have ample opportunities for one-on-one interaction with our esteemed professors.

Integrated, Systems-Based Curriculum

We believe in an integrated and systems-based approach to learning. Our students have access to a variety of learning opportunities, such as interactive lectures, small-group work sessions, individual and group presentations, team-based learning, and simulations with standardized patients. Our programs also go beyond what big international schools offer, providing unique learning experiences that set us apart.
