Academic Preparedness

Master’s program participants who have successfully completed upper-level science undergraduate coursework will build the strong pre-medical foundation necessary for academic success in our MD program. The accelerated curriculum mirrors the pace and rigor of medical school, offering students a unique opportunity to sharpen their academic skills in a demanding environment. Courses are led by professors with extensive experience in their fields and as MD program instructors, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience.

Schedule Flexibility

The curriculum was designed to be accessible to students around the world. It is offered on-campus or online, with classes starting either in January, May or September. Full-time, part-time and asynchronous attendance options are also available. However, we do recommend that students strongly consider the in-person, full-time option, as that will allow you to focus completely on your studies and best prepare you to successfully transition into the Basic Science portion of the Doctor of Medicine program.

Our faculty and staff are committed to helping each student achieve their goal of entering Caribbean medical school and going on to become a practicing doctor. From day one, we work closely with students to help them successfully engage with the material and optimize their learning experiences. Faculty provide dedicated office hours where students can ask questions, and our extensive Student Support Services, such as The Learning Center, provide both academic and personal strategies to help students effectively navigate the requirements of their medical studies.

Pre-Med Master’s Program Timeline at MUA

Master’s Admissions Requirements

  • Entry Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
  • Completed Coursework: General Chemistry (½ Year or 1 Term) is required. It is strongly suggested that applicants complete General Biology and additional science coursework as well.
  • English Proficiency: Since English is the language of instruction at MUA, it is important that applicants be prepared academically to pursue the curriculum and be able to communicate effectively. Applicants whose principal language is not English may be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or another comparable test.

Accreditation and Recognition

Our 4-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM), which is recognized by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME). WFME standards have been deemed comparable to the standards used to accredit medical schools in the United States by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA).

MUA pre-med programs, including the Master’s program, are accredited by the St. Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Education.

Medical University of the Americas is among the select international medical schools with approvals in the key U.S. states of New York, California and Florida. These states mandate regular institutional reviews and approvals prior to granting access to clerkship opportunities in their respective states, and other states rely on these approvals for the purposes of licensure.

Our MD graduates are eligible to practice in all 50 U.S. states, Canada and internationally.

Student Experience at MUA

The Medical University of the Americas faculty and administrative teams are committed to helping all pre-med and MD program students succeed academically, personally and throughout their future careers as practicing physicians!

FAQS About the Pre-Med Master’s Program

The best pre-med courses for aspiring physicians are science and medical-related courses, as well as English. Science and medical courses will help you develop the knowledge needed to understand the early instruction in an MD program, and experience in English courses will help ensure you can effectively engage with the material, professors and your fellow classmates.

The best pre-med degree program depends on where you are currently in your medical education journey. Aspiring physicians who wish to undertake an undergraduate program should pursue a science-based major. If you would like to enter medical school without finishing an undergraduate degree, you can obtain a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in pre-med programs such as our 5-year BSc/MD program or 6-year BSc/MD degree program. Or, if you’ve already finished your undergraduate studies but need to enhance your science-related knowledge before medical school, our pre-med Master’s program may fit best for you.

The focus of your Master’s degree should be in a science or medical discipline if you wish for it to prepare you for medical school. Beneficially, our Master of Science (MSc) in Biomedical Science pre-med program is specifically tailored to help prepare students for the rigors of our MD program.

At MUA, we consider applications holistically and do not require a minimum GPA in order to apply. Of course, the higher your GPA, the better chance you have of being accepted to medical school and to secure merit-based financial support.
