Exploring Pathways to an MD Degree: Pre-Med Programs
Learn more about the educational options for those who wish to pursue an MD degree without completing a pre-med undergraduate program.
The traditional path to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree typically involves completing a pre-medical or science-based undergraduate program before proceeding into an accredited 4-Year MD Program. However, for many aspiring physicians, the journey can unfold somewhat differently.
Whether you’re someone who has known they wanted to earn their MD since they were very young, and subsequently do not feel the need to spend four years exploring the field in an undergraduate program, or you are a career-changer whose passion for medicine developed more recently, Medical University of the Americas (MUA) has a pre-med program that can help you achieve your goals!
In this blog article, we will explore three pre-medical programs that are designed to support future medical doctors from different educational backgrounds: the Pre-Medical Master’s Program, the 5-Year BSc/MD Program and the 6-Year BSc/MD Program.
But before we dive in, let’s clarify the key concept we’ll be discussing today.
What Is a Pre-Med Program?
Typically, a pre-medical program refers to an undergraduate level program (in college or university) that aspiring health experts may take in advance of applying to medical school. These programs can encompass a range of majors, including biological sciences, math and statistics, and psychology. Science-focused programs are usually the most popular pre-med programs given their overlap with med school curriculums. However, as long as the program in question helps students meet the pre-requisite course requirements for medical school admission, it can be considered a pre-med major.
Similarly, pre-med programs offered by medical schools, such as those at MUA that we will highlight today, are designed to provide future medical doctors with the foundational knowledge they need to successfully transition into a comprehensive MD program. The difference is one of scope, given that pre-med programs offered by medical schools often focus specifically on a more narrow range of information and skills, and typically last for shorter amounts of time than full undergraduate programs.

At MUA, we’re proud to deliver impactful pre-med programs that help aspiring physicians get on the path to career success. Whether you have some medical study background or none at all, we have a pathway that will help you become a practicing doctor. We can’t wait to support your journey!

Now that we have more clearly defined the difference between undergraduate and medical school pre-med programs, let’s jump right into our examination of how MUA offerings can benefit you!
Discover the Pre-Medical Master’s Program
The MUA Master’s program is an accelerated medical education option for career changers with an undergraduate-level degree and some foundational science coursework.
Participants spend eight months (two semesters) studying full-time in the Master’s curriculum (or part-time over a longer timeline). Once they have successfully completed all requirements, they are awarded a Master of Science (MSc) in Biomedical Science and are accepted into MUA’s 4-Year MD Program.
Importantly, potential participants need to have taken a General Chemistry course while completing their undergraduate degree, and it is highly recommended that they have an undergraduate background in General Biology and other science coursework as well.
Master’s Program Benefits
Aspiring physicians who choose this pathway experience several programmatic and personal benefits. These include:
- Develop your foundation: This program is designed to help aspiring physicians develop the scientific knowledge and study skills required to succeed in a rigorous MD program. Beneficially, participants learn from professors who also teach MD students and know well what each person needs to know and develop to be successful over the full course of their medical studies. Excitingly, some of our highest performing MD graduates began in the Master’s program.
- Study at your own pace: As noted, this program is offered in both full-time and part-time participation modes, and students can attend in-person on our Nevis campus or online. If joining online, students can also attend asynchronously, which makes the program accessible for future medical doctors from around the world. We do recommend that potential students strongly consider the full-time, in-person option, as this best prepares them for the requirements of the Basic Science program (semesters 1-5 of the 10 semester MD program).
- Extensive support services: MUA is committed to providing all our students with the individualized support they need to succeed both academically and personally. Our intentionally small class sizes ensure that professors have the capacity to connect directly with every student during flexible office hours, and our campus services support the mental, physical and academic well-being of MD and pre-med attendees.
Importantly, like all MUA pre-med programs (including those we will discuss next), the Master’s program is accredited by the St. Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Education. The MUA MD program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM), which is recognized by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME).
Explore the 5-Year BSc/MD Program
The 5-Year BSc/MD Program is a unique pathway into our comprehensive MD program for those with baccalaureate diplomas, associates degrees and other international educational qualifications. Successful participants first complete the pre-medical curriculum over three semesters, before progressing directly into the MUA MD program (10 semesters).
Excitingly, students who complete this journey earn both a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biomedical Science degree and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree!
5-Year BSc/MD Program Benefits
The many benefits for pathway participants include:
- Two degrees in five years: As noted, this accelerated pre-med program provides successful participants with both a BSc and MD degree after completing 13 semesters.
- Save time and money: By progressing into our MD program after completing only three pre-med semesters, students are able to bypass the significant financial investment and years of study that accompany pursuing a four-year undergraduate degree.
- Expand your network: Students who undertake the 5-year program begin medical school with a built-in network of friends and peers who have experienced the same instructions and developed the same study skills. This provides an early level of comfort as they adapt to the rigors of the MD program together.
Participants in the 5-Year BSc/MD Program, as well as those in the 6-year version (described next), are able to complete the pre-med semesters online, including asynchronously, to accommodate those from different timezones. However, similarly to the Master’s program, we recommend that students choose the full-time, in-person learning option, as that is what they will experience as Basic Science students in the MD program.
Learn About the 6-Year BSc/MD Program
The 6-Year BSc/MD Program is designed for secondary graduates who are certain they are destined for careers as practicing physicians. It allows students to completely bypass a post-secondary undergraduate education and progress directly from high school to medical school.
After successfully completing the 6-year curriculum, including six pre-med semesters and 10 semesters in the MD program, graduates are awarded both a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biomedical Science degree and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from MUA!
6-Year BSc/MD Program Benefits
High school graduates who are passionate about becoming an MD, and who wish to fast-track their journeys, experience many benefits when choosing this medical doctor pathway, including:
- Accelerated journey: By progressing directly into our MD program after completing their secondary education, and bypassing a pre-medical undergraduate program, participants save significant amounts of tuition, housing and student living costs over 3-4 years in college or university.
- Faculty and friends: Pre-med participants spend two years (six semesters) learning directly from faculty members who also teach in the MD program. This provides them with key information and insights about what to expect, which helps them hit the ground running in Basic Science. Of further benefit is the built-in network of friends and study partners who are progressing along the same journey, and who can provide support and guidance.
- Two degrees in six years: This medical education journey provides graduates with both a BSc and MD degree after successfully completing 16 semesters.
Beneficially, all MUA programs, including the 6-year program, feature start dates in January, May and September. This provides aspiring physicians with the opportunity to start when they feel completely ready to succeed academically and personally, and make the most of their educational opportunities.
Choosing the Right Pathway for You
If one or all of these pre-med options sound interesting, it is important to read through each program’s admissions requirements. This will ensure that you understand whether the offering in question is right for you.
As a quick way of evaluating each program’s fit for your needs, consider where you are in your educational journey. If you are or will soon be a high school graduate, the 6-Year BSc/MD Program may be perfect. If you have earned an international baccalaureate diploma or associate degree (or something similar), consider the 5-Year BSc/MD Program. And if you have earned an undergraduate degree, but only completed a minimum number of science courses, the Pre-Med Master’s Program could be a good fit.

FAQS About Pre-Med Degrees
Absolutely! The most common pathway to earning a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree involves completing a pre-med undergraduate program and then entering medical school. Medical Master’s degrees are generally chosen by career changers whose undergraduate degree did not fully prepare them for a comprehensive MD program, or by those who are interested in earning a medically focused PhD degree.
The most direct pathway into the MUA MD program is the 6-Year BSc/MD Program. It is tailored for secondary graduates who wish to progress directly from high school to medical school. This pathway allows participants to save significant amounts of time and money on the journey to earning their MD degree, especially when compared with the more traditional route involving four years of undergraduate studies before four years in an MD program.
Yes, the MUA Master’s degree is a strong pre-med option for career changers with an undergraduate degree and some foundational science coursework. However, other programs may fit better for those with different levels of pre-med education.
Aspiring physicians should choose an undergraduate program that helps them meet standard MD program admissions requirements. These often include courses in biology, chemistry, math and English. The most popular pre-med undergrad programs are generally science-focused, as they align nicely with med school curriculums. However, if you are thinking about a specific medical school before choosing your undergrad program, check out the pre-requisite courses and ensure that any undergraduate program you choose will prepare you effectively.
