We are proud to announce that a Medical University of the Americas (MUA) faculty member has recently been named as a fellow for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). In addition, the Board of Trustees from Marymount Manhattan College voted her to the title of Professor Emerita, a rare distinction in the 90 year history of the college.

Congratulations to Ann Aguanno, PhD, on these honors! Dr. Aguanno is Professor of Medical Genetics and Biochemistry, Director of the Genetics Course and Chair of the Molecular Sciences Department at MUA.

ASBMB designates fellows that have contributed excellent service to the society and have accomplished notable advancements and outcomes in scientific research, education, mentorship, diversity and inclusion, advocacy, and service to science and the associated community.

“We are glad to welcome the 24 new ASBMB fellows in the 2025 class,” said Chi Fung Lee, Chair of the ASBMB Membership Committee Fellows Task Force. “They have shown remarkable commitment to ASBMB through their sustained service, as well as impactful accomplishments in their professions of research, education, advocacy and service to the scientific community. We are honored to have these colleagues to represent ASBMB. We look forward to their continued contribution as role models and mentors to inspire members of ASBMB.”

Dr. Aguanno has developed and demonstrated her expertise in both science and education in a variety of ways. She has studied the role of cyclin-dependent kinases in neurodegenerative diseases and insulin regulation, and has explored improved training methods and opportunities for undergraduate biology researchers. Currently, Dr. Aguanno focuses on enhancing medical education for future physicians using innovative and sustainable methodology. She applies this approach while teaching medical genetics in our MD program and general biology to pre-med Master’s program students.

Once again, we congratulate Dr. Aguanno on both these amazing achievements, and thank her for her efforts and dedication to the MUA community!
