What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine, and as an international student, how did you first hear about Medical University of the Americas?
“I have been interested in medicine for as long as I can remember. My mother was a perioperative nurse, and I often accompanied her to the hospital, where I waited for her to be done with work before we went home together. While there, I constantly observed the rhythm of care behind the scenes. These early experiences gave me a quiet but lasting interest in healthcare. Watching doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals care for patients with dedication and compassion planted a seed in me that gradually grew into my desire to become a physician.
My first exposure to Medical University of the Americas came through my own research. While exploring top-rated medical schools in the Caribbean, MUA appeared as an option. As I learned more, I became increasingly interested in what the school offered and felt compelled to explore it further.”
What ultimately led you to choose MUA for your medical education?
“I chose MUA because, among the schools I was considering at the time, it stood out as both highly rated and financially accessible. The admissions process was also straightforward and seamless, which made the transition feel more manageable.
Beyond academics and logistics, I was also drawn to the island of Nevis (home of the MUA Basic Science campus). It felt like a supportive and focused environment where I could dedicate myself to the foundational years of medical training without unnecessary distractions.
Altogether, MUA felt like the right balance of opportunity, structure and environment for the start of my journey in medicine.”
How did the early experience at MUA prepare you for your clinical training and medical career?
“My experience at MUA laid a strong academic and professional foundation for my clinical training. During the Basic Science years, the consistent standardized examinations at the end of each semester provided an important benchmark to objectively assess my knowledge. This structure helped me identify areas of weakness early-on and address them proactively, which later proved to be invaluable when preparing for standardized licensing examinations. It also helped me become familiar with exam styles and develop effective test-taking strategies, which strengthened my overall confidence and performance.
Equally important was the emphasis on clinical documentation. We were consistently reminded that “if you did not document it, you did not do it,” which reinforced the importance of accurate and thorough patient notes. This training helped me develop discipline in clinical record-keeping and an appreciation for the role documentation plays in patient safety and continuity of care.
In addition, MUA’s affiliations with clinical sites across the United States provided me with meaningful hands-on experience. Through these Clinical Medicine rotations, I was able to refine my clinical skills, strengthen my approach to patient care and develop greater clinical confidence. Collectively, these experiences prepared me well for residency and have shaped how I continue to approach medicine today.”
How has your education at MUA influenced your approach to patient care and your work today?
“From my experience at MUA, both during my Basic Science training and through my exposure to affiliated clinical sites in the United States, one consistent theme stood out: a strong commitment to excellence in everything we do. That culture shaped how I now approach patient care.
My early clinical foundation was built on a solid understanding of the basic sciences, which reinforced the importance of grounding every clinical decision in strong scientific principles. At the same time, being trained in an environment that emphasized discipline and high standards helped me develop a structured and thoughtful approach to medicine.
Equally important was the exposure to compassionate clinicians during my training. Observing how they combined clinical excellence with empathy left a lasting impression on me. It taught me that being a good physician is not only about accuracy and knowledge, but also about presence, communication and compassion.
These experiences continue to guide me today. I carry forward both the scientific discipline and the human-centered approach I developed at MUA into every patient interaction.”
What advice would you give to other international students considering MUA for their medical education?
“I would tell any prospective international student that MUA can be a strong and supportive place to pursue your goal of becoming a physician in North America. The school provides a structured academic environment, dedicated faculty and staff, and the necessary tools to help students navigate their medical training effectively.
One of the strengths I found particularly valuable was the level of individualized support available to international students. From the admissions process onward, there are experienced staff members who understand visa requirements, personal transitions and the unique challenges international students face. That guidance can make a meaningful difference in helping students feel grounded and supported throughout their journey.
Of course, medical school is demanding anywhere in the world, but MUA provides a pathway that makes the dream feel achievable. If you are willing to put in the work, stay disciplined and remain focused on your goal, it is absolutely possible to succeed.
To any student considering this path, believe in your ability to do it. If I can do it, you can do it too. I wish you nothing but success as you begin your medical journey!”
